Communication Self Review

The only way to know if you are growing in your communication is to review your progress the way a sports team would review their plays and previous games. Many of us perceive our communication one way, but others may experience it differently. The problem is that perception becomes our reality, so we need to know if our reality is based on a false self-perception.

Here is a simple four step process for a self-review.

1. Record a 5 Minute Video
This is the foundation for your self-review. The video needs to be non-rehearsed, and it needs to be raw and real. You can tell about an experience that you had, talk about your favorite tv show/movie, or book. Talk about anything unscripted for 5 minutes.

2. Listen to the Video (Auditory Review)
Don’t watch yourself, just listen. This step of an auditory review is crucial because it will forever change you as a communicator by answering one very important question, “If you were your audience, could you listen to you?”

3. Watch the Video (Visual Review)
Don’t listen, just watch. It’s a painful process, but it’s important. This step is extra important because as you speak you can at least hear a version of yourself, but it’s impossible to see yourself unless you watch a video. Notice your body language, body movement, and hand gestures.

4. Transcribe the Video
Highlight all of the non-words, filler-words, and catch-phrases. Be aware of words that rob you of credibility and authority.

The most powerful thing about communication is that everyone does it. We need strong communication skills for every relationship, every interaction, and every aspect of our lives. To quote the great philosopher Shrek, “Ogres are like onions. Ogres have layers. Onions have layers…” Well the same is true for communication. I this review will help you continue to grow as a communicator as you peel back the layers.
